Mike Schroepfer’s Biography

Welcome to Metis Strategy’s Forum on World Class IT. I’m Peter High, and I’m pleased to welcome Mike Schroepfer to the broadcast. Mike is the Chief Technology Officer at Facebook. In that role, he leads the development of the technology strategies and teams that will enable Facebook to connect billions of people around the world and make significant breakthroughs in fields like artificial intelligence and virtual reality.

Before Facebook, Mike was the Vice President of Engineering at Mozilla Corporation, where he led the global and open product development process behind Firefox. Mike was formerly a distinguished engineer at Sun Microsystems, which acquired his company, CenterRun. He began his career working at various startups, including a digital effects software startup where he developed software that has been used in several major motion pictures.

Mike holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in computer science from Stanford University and has filed two U.S. patents.

I met with Mike in his office at Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California last week, and our conversation covered Facebook’s ten-year plan, and the three innovation pillars that he leads. Examples of innovations that the organizations are working on in the near and long-term, the methods he uses to evaluate recruits and employees, the way in which Facebook has maintained its innovative edge despite its extraordinary growth, among a variety of other topics.

John is the Co-Chairman of Deloitte’s Center for the Edge. This Silicon Valley-based group conducts original research and develops substantive points of view on emerging business opportunities that should be on CEOs’ agendas. John has over 30 years of experience as a management consultant working both independently and with leading consulting firms. John is also a highly-acclaimed speaker and author. His latest book is “The Power of Pull: How Small Moves, Smartly Made, can Set Big Things in Motion”.

Scott McNealy’s Biography

Scott McNealy was one of the chief architects of the first wave of the internet, as he co-founded and served as Chief Executive Officer of Sun Microsystems from 1982 through 2006. The company was sold to Oracle in 2010. More recently, Scott co-founded and has served as CEO of Wayin, a social intelligence company that integrates social content into new experiences for consumers and delivers greater value and control for brands.

Scott received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard University and he received an MBA from Stanford University.

Ron Ross’ Biography

Ron Ross is a Fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, a non-regulatory agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce.  NIST’s mission is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life.

Ron’s role at NIST is in the information technology laboratory, where he leads the Federal Information Security Management Act Implementation Project. He is also the principal architect of the NIST Risk Management Framework, and leads the joint taskforce between the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community, and the Committee on National Security Systems that developed the Unified Information Security Framework for the federal government.

Ron held previous roles at the Institute for Defense Analysis and as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army.

Ron received his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from West Point, his Master of Science degree in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School, and his PhD in Computer Science from the Naval Postgraduate School.

Meg Whitman’s Biography

Meg Whitman is the Chairman, President, and CEO of Hewlett Packard Company.  She will be the CEO of HP Enterprise and non-executive chairman of the board at HP Inc. following HP’s split into two separate companies on November 1st of this year.  Meg has been CEO at HP since September of 2011 and started as a member of the board there in January of 2011.

Prior to joining HP, Meg was the republican candidate for governor of California in 2010, a race which she eventually lost to Jerry Brown.

Before embarking on her political career, Meg Whitman was the President and CEO of eBay, where she began with the company in March of 1998.  During her time at the organization the company from 30 employees and 4 million dollars in revenue to over 15,000 employees and annual revenue near 8 billion dollars.  She has also held executive positions at Hasbro Inc, the Stride Rite Corporation, Walt-Disney, and Bain & Company.  Meg also currently serves on the board of directors of Proctor & Gamble

Meg earned her bachelor’s degree in Economics from Princeton in 1977, and received her MBA from Harvard Business School in 1979.

Marc Lore’s Biography

Marc Lore is the Founder and CEO of Jet, the online marketplace that will take advantage of the economics of online shopping to create a new business model promising the lowest prices on the Internet. The company officially launches the day we are broadcasting, July 13, 2015. The company has raised over $220 million in funding.

Prior to Jet, Marc was the Co-founder and CEO of Quidsi, the parent company of e-commerce websites Diapers.com, Soap.com, Wag.com and more. The company was founded in 2005 and sold to Amazon in 2011 for $550 million. Marc was also the Co-founder and CEO of The Pit, Inc., an internet market-making collectible company constructed as an alternative to eBay, which was sold to the Topps Company in 2001.

Marc has received a wide array of industry accolades, including E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year regional winner and Fortune’s “smartest people in technology;” The Sunday Times Magazine of London named him one of Britain’s “new high-tech entrepreneurs and whiz kids.” Prior to being a serial entrepreneur, Marc held various investment banking positions, including Executive Vice President of Sanwa International Bank in London, where he was head of the bank’s Risk Management Division and Vice President of Emerging Markets Risk Management at Credit Suisse First Boston.

Marc received his BA in Business Management and Economics from Bucknell University.

Peretz Lavie’s Biography

Peretz Lavie is the President of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, the oldest university in Israel specializing in the sciences, engineering and medicine.  Throughout his six year tenure as president, Lavie has overseen the Technion’s 18 faculties, and lead international initiatives like the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute in New York and the institute for technology at Shantou University.

President Lavie has researched, taught, and worked as an administrator at the Technion since he returned to Israel from the United States in 1975 to found the Technion’s sleep laboratory.  He later opened a similar center affiliated with Harvard University, authored several books including The Enchanted World of Sleep and Restless Nights: Understanding Snoring and Sleep Apnea and served as President of the Israeli Society of Sleep Research.  He also has advocated for policy reforms in education, transportation safety, broadcasting and the military where those fields relate to sleep.

Peretz Lavie received his bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Statistics from Tel Aviv University, earned his PhD in Physiological Psychology at the University of Florida, and pursued post-doctoral research at the University of California at San Diego.

Emerson Spartz’s Biography

Emerson is the CEO of Chicago-based Spartz Media Inc., one of the fastest growing digital media publishers with 18 websites, including GivesMeHope, OMGFacts, and Dose.

Emerson gained fame at the age of 12, when he founded MuggleNet, which was at one time the world’s largest Harry Potter website.  MuggleNet eventually attracted 50 million page views per month, and spawned the most listened to podcast in the world. Along the way, Emerson met author JK Rowling as a representative of the Harry Potter fandom.  Emerson has written a number of books related to the various sites that he has created, as well.

Emerson graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in management from the Mendoza College of Business.

Pres. Vicente Fox’s Biography

Welcome to Metis Strategy’s Forum on World Class IT. I’m Peter High and I am pleased to welcome President Vicente Fox to the broadcast. Mr. Fox is the former President of Mexico, a role in which he served from 2000 to 2006. President Fox is considered an innovative force in enhancing the global presence of Mexico and Latin America in business and technology, topics which we cover in some depth in this interview.

Prior to his tenure as President, Mr. Fox first served as the President of Coca-Cola Mexico rising to that role after beginning as a delivery route supervisor for the company. Under his leadership, Coca Cola became the most popular drink in Mexico, increasing sales by almost 50%. As a politician, Fox was elected as Governor of Guanajuato after first serving in the federal Chamber of Deputies. In 1997, Fox began his campaign for President of Mexico, there years before his eventual election.

In January 2007, Fox announced plans for the construction of Mexico’s first Presidential Library, Centro Fox. As a library, center of advancement for democracy, and museum, Centro Fox has a stated mission of training and developing Latin American leaders based on social values. To date, the center provides a variety of programming and resources that support this mission through policy, social, cultural, and academic initiatives.

President Fox is a graduate of Harvard Business School and received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City.

Yves Behar’s Biography

Yves is a design entrepreneur and the founder of fuseproject, the San Francisco and New York based design and branding firm he established in 1999. He is also Chief Creative Officer at Jawbone, where for the last 11 years his products, brand, and communications work has helped the company become a leader in wearable and audio consumer electronics. Yves is also the Creative Co-Founder of OUYA, an open sourced gaming platform, and is Co-founder of start-up August, a next generation home entry system.

His other collaborations with renowned partners such as Herman Miller, GE, Puma, PayPal, SodaStream, Samsung, Prada, and many others have received international acclaim. Yves’ works are included in the permanent collections of museums worldwide, and he is a frequent speaker on design, sustainability, and business topics

Yves has a bachelor of science degree in Industrial Design from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
