Andre Mendes’ Biography

Andre is the interim CEO of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, a government agency whose goal is to deliver news and information to audiences overseas.  As interim CEO, Andre oversees all aspects of U.S. international media, and provides management of BBG’s technical, professional, and administrative operations.

Prior to assuming the interim CEO role, Andre served as the director of global operations, managing and supervising the IBB Chief of staff, as well as the Office of Technology, Services, and Innovation.  He also served as the program administrator for grants made to BBG-sponsored grantees.

Prior to joining BBG, Andre served as senior vice president of strategic planning and CIO of Special Olympics International, where he managed the organizations technology infrastructure and helped develop a four year Special Olympics strategic plan.  Previously, Andre also served as Chief Technology Integration Officer for PBS (the Public Broadcasting Service).

Emerson Spartz’s Biography

Emerson is the CEO of Chicago-based Spartz Media Inc., one of the fastest growing digital media publishers with 18 websites, including GivesMeHope, OMGFacts, and Dose.

Emerson gained fame at the age of 12, when he founded MuggleNet, which was at one time the world’s largest Harry Potter website.  MuggleNet eventually attracted 50 million page views per month, and spawned the most listened to podcast in the world. Along the way, Emerson met author JK Rowling as a representative of the Harry Potter fandom.  Emerson has written a number of books related to the various sites that he has created, as well.

Emerson graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in management from the Mendoza College of Business.

Rich Karlgaard’s Biography:

Rich has served as the Publisher of Forbes magazine since 1998. In addition to his role at Forbes, Rich serves as an Advisor at Rocket Ventures and as a Member of the Advisory Board of Prometheus Investment Group. He is also a Co-Founder of Garage Technology Ventures LLC and currently serves on its Board of Directors, along with serving on the Boards of New EA, Intelius and MobShop.

Prior to his current role as Publisher of Forbes, Rich served as the Editor of Forbes ASAP in concert with writer and futurist George Gilder and Forbes’ CEO Steve Forbes. Prior to this role, he co-founded and edited Upside magazine and also co-founded the 6500 member business and technology forum in Silicon Valley, the Churchill Club. In addition, Rich co-founded garage.com, which later became Garage Technology Ventures, a web-based startup capital firm, in 1997 with Guy Kawasaki and Craig Johnson.

In 1997, for his efforts in founding the Churchill Club, Rich was named a Northern California winner of the Ernst & Young “Entrepreneur of the Year” award. In 1998, he was named to Upside magazine’s Elite 100 in the computer and communications industries. Rich also serves as a regular panelist on Forbes on FOX and as an analyst on CNBC’s The Kudlow Report. He was also the author of Life 2.0: How People Across America Are Transforming Their Lives by Finding the Where of Their Happiness, a Wall Street Journal business bestseller, in 2004 and more recently The Soft Edge: Where Great Companies Find Lasting Success, which released in 2014.

Gary Beach’s Biography

Gary is the publisher emeritus for CIO magazine, America’s leading magazine and Web site for technology executives. Gary is also the author of the bestselling book  The U.S. Technology Skills Gap: What Every IT Exec Needs to Know to Save America’s Future.

In 1995 Gary founded Tech Corps, a non-profit and the nation’s longest standing group challenging IT workers to volunteer time to public schools. As spokesperson for CIO magazine he has appeared on CNBC “Squawk Box”, “Squawk on the Street” and “Closing Bell” programs addressing technology investment trends. From 1999 – 2002 he was a regular technology commentator on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered” and “Morning Edition” programs.

Prior to joining CIO magazine in 1997, Beach was publisher and president of two IDG publications, Computerworld and Network World. He joined IDG in 1987 after a 10 year career in managerial posts at McGraw-Hill, Inc.

Kevin Hart’s Biography

Kevin is the Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Cox Communications, a multi-service broadband communications and entertainment company with more than 6 million residential and commercial customers. In that role, he is responsible for providing overall leadership, strategic and operational direction to the planning and development of an integrated technological platform. He also aligns the technology strategy with overall business objectives.

Prior to his time at Cox Communications, Kevin was Chief Information Officer at Clearwire Corporation.  While there, he was responsible for the company’s Information Technology, Enterprise Network Deployment Planning Office, and Business Process Management functions.  His key accomplishments with Clearwire included leading the transformation of the IT organization during the deployment of the company’s 4G wireless broadband service across the nation.

Kevin also spent time as the CIO at Level 3, one of the world’s largest IP communications providers, and held leadership roles at Capgemini Consulting, International Paper and the former Southwestern Bell Communications (SBC).

Kevin earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tulsa and an MBA in Finance with Honors from Notre Dame.

Bill Schlough’s Biography

Bill is the Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer of the defending Major League Baseball World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, where he has worked since 1999. Bill served as Interim President of the Giants’ San Jose Class A affiliate in 2011 and since 2012, he has been on the team’s board of directors and serves as chairman.

An Olympic enthusiast, Bill is a board member of the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee (BASOC) and served as a technology lead for San Francisco’s bids to host both the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games.

Bill’s event experience includes assignments at the 1994 World Cup along with Olympic Games in Atlanta, Salt Lake and Torino, Italy. Previously, he worked as a consultant with Booz-Allen & Hamilton and Electronic Data Systems, supporting a diverse collection of clients including AMD, Northrop Grumman and General Motors.

Bill was just named Information Week’s IT Chief of the Year for 2012, among other accolades he has received.

Mike Kail’s Biography

Mike Kail is the Vice President of IT Operations at Netflix, a provider of on-demand Internet streaming media and flat rate DVD-by-mail delivery. Mike leads a team of more than 115 employees in his organization.

Prior to his time at Netflix, Mike was the Vice President of IT Operations at Attensity, a social analytics company, where he was responsible for various big data components as well as the integration of Americas and the Europe, Middle East and Asian IT teams.

Rick King’s Biography

Rick is the chief operating officer for technology of Thomson Reuters, the world’s leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals.

Rick has been with Thomson Reuters since 2000 and has held numerous executive-level roles in the company.  Prior to Thomson Reuters, Rick held executive-level positions at Ceridian Employer Services and Jostens Learning among other companies. Rick began his career as a teacher and coach in Vermont.

In 2011, Rick was named by Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton to serve on the Metropolitan Airports Commission and the Governor’s Technology Advisory Council.  In addition, Rick is recognized as an expert on broadband and was named by former Governor Tim Pawlenty to chair Minnesota’s Ultra High-Speed Broadband Task Force.  Rick serves on Minnesota’s Science and Technology Authority Advisory Commission and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Telecommunication and e-Commerce Committee.  He also serves as a trustee for Minnesota Public Radio, is vice chair of the board of trustees for the Science Museum of Minnesota and serves on the advisory board of the Carlson Global Institute at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.

Rick’s many accolades include being honored as Minnesota’s 2008 Technology Executive of the Year by the Minnesota High Tech Association.

Michael Skaff’s Biography

Dennis is the CIO of Electronic Arts, where he runs all major facets of the organization’s IT operation.  Prior to serving as CIO, Dennis spent time as EA’s IT lead in Europe as well in Asia.

Prior to joining EA, Dennis was a Senior  Manager in the Strategy & Operations practice at Deloitte Consulting.  He also was a Director at HP, a Manager within the Strategic Information Technology Practice at A.T.
